Hyundai Enters the Limousine Market with Equus VL500

Filed under:

Hot on the heels of the announcement that it would be bringing its flagship Equus luxury sedan to the North American market comes the launch of the Equus VL500 limousine. The stretched limo measures a foot longer than the luxury automobile on which it is based, and beats the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S500L and Lexus LS460L by some 15 inches, providing rear-seat passengers with that much extra legroom.

Although it hardly ranks among the top premium marques on this side of the ocean, Hyundai has quickly risen to the number four spot among automakers worldwide, and is certainly the largest in its domestic market, where the Equus VL500 is being launched exclusively for the time being. Prices hover around the Korean Won equivalent of $120,000, and three examples have even been outfitted with full bomb-proof armor for the President of South Korea, which will be used at the upcoming G20 summit there next year.

ZEFIRO 380 - $4 Billion super green trains for China to boost infrastructure

ZEFIRO_380.jpg
A Montreal-based train and plane maker has racked up another big win in the Middle Kingdom with a $4-billion (U.S.) contract for a Chinese joint venture to supply 80 next-generation, super high-speed trains to the Ministry of Railways. The deal – of which Bombardier’s share is valued at $2-billion – is for the company’s sleek Zefiro high-speed train and marks the latest in a series of increasingly important transactions for Bombardier in China. The Ministry of Railways has awarded a contract for 80 high speed trains to the Qingdao-based Bombardier Sifang joint venture.

The new rail line is claiming to be the most environmentally friendly machines on the planet but no technical details are out yet. The 27·4bn yuan order covers 20 eight-car and 60 16-car train sets, designated Zefiro 380. Deliveries are expected to start in 2012 and run until 2014.

Hydro-electricity anywhere anytime is the ultimate green gadget

Hydro-Electric-Barrel-Generator.jpg
This is a floating waterwheel that can generate electricity when suspended over a river or other flowing water regardless of the depth and speed of flow. The inventors claim it to be both efficient and cost effective, as well as being less intrusive to the environment than other hydroelectric solutions. The HEB can be suspended over any river or stream, and possibly implemented in the ocean to take advantage of wave energy as well. The design is deceptively simple: a one-piece large plastic wheel within a frame, spinning with the flow of water. What’s not so obvious is the internal design: a set of two integral planet gear driven permanent magnet generators turning the motion into usable power. The advantages of the HEB are many: compared to conventional waterwheels, it operates quietly, and is easy to transport and install. The machine is also environmentally friendly because of its shallow draft in the water, and has a low capital outlay per kilowatt. The HEB doesn’t interrupt the flow of the water and can adjust to changing water levels, while rolling over any debris in the flow.

The HEB could also be modular, so for more power, another generator can be installed either in parallel or in a series in the river. The hydroelectric device is also being developed with a tidal estuary variant which can be powered by both tides and waves.

Presso Espresso manual coffeemaker to save energy

manual-coffee-maker-presso-espresso.jpg
The one electrical appliance that is most used these days in the corporate sector is the espresso machine. For those who like to have their cup of espresso but worries about all the electricity wasted, then the Presso Espresso is your answer to your prayers. It is a non electric, manual coffee maker, capable of producing the required pressure to make your cup of coffee. This machine is really intelligent as it uses energy only when you boil a cup of water and it is also made from recyclable polished aluminium.

The machine is also easy to operate apparently – all you need to do is fill the steel filter with coffee and place it into Presso chrome holder. Pour boiling water into the heat proof cylinder at the top, lift the lever arms, place the coffee cup into position and lower the arms to trap air and force water at high pressure. Voila – there is your cuppa to jump start your day and feel great that it hasn’t eaten too much energy. If you want it, buy it for £78 ($125).

E-Wolf is the German electric answer to the Italian

e-Wolf_E2_electric_supercar.jpg
Recent cars from Tesla, Fisker and now the big guns like Audi and Mercedes show that an electric future can be just as much fun. And now we might have a winner, the e-Wolf E-2 concept. It looks like the results of a beautiful union of a Ferrari Enzo and Lamborghini Reventon and the concept is pure theatre from every angle. And underneath the skin they are aiming at 536bhp and 738lb/ft of torque that will power all four wheels through electric motors. The only issue is the weight; e-Wolf claims the overall weight will be around 2000lb, which seems a little optimistic. Even the Tesla Roadster weighs almost two tons thanks to the massive battery packs, but if they can do it then this will be a very cool car indeed – especially with all that torque available right from 1 rev.

The E-2 will hit 155mph, according to the manufacturer, can recharge 80 per cent of the batteries in 30 minutes and will have a range of 185 miles when it goes on sale in 2011.

Tokyo to build a solar powered stadium for the 2016 Olympics

Tokyo-olympic-stadium.jpg
Solar powered dragon-shaped World Games Stadium in Taiwan has been in green limelight for some time now. However it’s time to shift attention to the Tokyo Olympic stadium that claims to be first the completely solar powered stadium when it takes shape. Tokyo 2016 bid team for Olympics has announced this officially. Plans also include renovating existing sports structures that will eliminate the need for more materials and space. The plan also promises to reduce carbon footprints with the most compact Games plan in history. The team proposes to position 97% of venues within an 8km radius of the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village. By doing so, Tokyo intends to make a global statement about how much they care for our planet. With such green thoughts and proposals, I am sure, I need to book my tickets to Tokyo for the 2016 Olympic. On Oct. 2 in Copenhagen, Tokyo will compete with Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro to win the chance to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Beauty and brains is hard to come by these days. But with Rico’s Washbasin and Watercloset (W+W) combo, the fantasies come alive. This fancy multi-tasking toilet-sink combination is not just compact and perfect for your small apartment bathroom, but its smooth design boasts of an ingenious self-contained greywater system that is capable of reducing water use by upto25% compared to standard 6/3liter dual flush toilet. The system uses water-reuse technology and also doesn’t flush the bacteria in the units’ built-in container, thus reducing the bad odor. Though the model has been introduced in Japan and has been popular there for long, but the fresh features and the water re-cycling feature is very new and eco-friendly.

Datamancer’s Alchemist Keyboard confuses the geeks with symbols

alchemist1.jpg
This one is certainly not designed for a layman. Only folks with a scientific acquaintance will understand the need for such a keyboard. Exclusively designed for a pharmacist, Datamancer has given form to the Alchemist Keyboard. The site mentions that it is ‘themed around Apothecarial and Alchemical icons including the Bowl of Hygeia, the Caduceus, and the Eye of Ra (from which the modern “Rx” symbol used by pharmacists is derived). Stained-glass on the sides adds color to this otherwise all metal keyboard. Designed for PC use, it is a USB keyboard that is not compatible with Mac.It also comes with a braided brass cord. The site also gives account of various symbols used for the keys.
The function keys display the elemental symbols of the various metals used in the construction of the keyboard, as well as a few others. The tilde and number keys display the symbols for the sun, moon and the planets.

The symbols for Earth, Air, Fire and Water are found on the arrow keys and the number pad uses stylized Roman numerals.

The Enter and Shift keys are labeled with the symbols for Alchemical processes like mixing, stirring, combining, etc. Secundum artem is a Latin phrase meaning “according to the art.”

As soon as it hit eBay for sale, it was picked up for $2,300. However there are plans to make more of these Alchemist Keyboards (including Mac-compatible versions) to please all those who care to type on this confusing full-of-symbols keyboard. It will certainly complement the Steampunk LCD Monitor.

Beautiful mahogany hardwood adorns the room, while the JVC projector is mounted. Sound is provided by nine B&W Speakers that are hidden behind the sound panels including two Velodyne in-wall subs.
